Just 12 km. south of Colombo, Mount Lavinia is an immediate city suburb and the beach is one of the most popular even in the colonial times. It lies alongside a wind-swept promontory jutting into the waters of the Indian Ocean. The sand is softer while the waves are calmer and clearer. The Governor's House built in 1805 by Sir Thomas Maitland, is now part of the famous Mount Lavinia Hotel.

The best ones are those of Nilaveli,Marble Beach, Kuchchaveli, Sweat Bay and Dead Man's Cove, with its magnificent harbour, north of Trincomalee. The southern section includes the shiny clean beaches of Arugam Bay,Passekudah,and Kalkudah.
